Colorado Profiles: Men and Women Who Shaped the Centennial State
Published in Paperback by Cordillera Pr (December, 1987)
Authors: John H. Monnett and Michael McCarthy
Average review score:

Amazing book
Being a history student I may be a bit prejudiced, but I loved this book. I've read countless history books and many of them are incredibly dry. This book was engaging and interesting. I highly recommend it for a crash course in Colorado history.

Cowboy in the Making (James, Will, Tumbleweed Series.)
Published in Hardcover by Mountain Press Publishing Company (June, 2003)
Author: Will Lone Cowboy James
Average review score:

Story of an orphan boy who develops some unusual friendships
It's difficult to peg the age range of Will James' Cowboy In The Making: as kindergarten and first grade picturebook readers will find it too hard, but parents may find it just fine for assisted reading. Young readers and those in grades 2-5 will appreciate this story of an orphan boy who develops some unusual friendships in his travels. James' pen and ink drawings and four color paintings enhance this slim book's appeal.

Crossing the Colorado Rockies 1864
Published in Paperback by Aladdin Library (April, 1999)
Author: Laurie Lawlor
Average review score:

A great book.
Because of her father's debts, thirteen-year-old Eda Hitchcock and her family are on their way west to Pike's Peak, hoping to strike it rich. After a long and difficult journey, they're finally almost there. But living in a tumbledown cabin in the wilderness and losing everything they own to thieves isn't what they expected. Nothing seems to go right. Eda sometimes wonders, will they ever get back home? This was a great book. It was interesting, and exciting, and had a likeable main character.

Cunning of the Mountain Man

Heroic recording
I picked up this audio cassette and enjoyed the dramatic presentation very much. I've listened to a few books on tape but this was the first that I've heard as an audio drama. I'm looking for more now because of this tape. I'm not familiar with the Mountain Man series, but I have become a fan through this recording.

Curtsey
Published in Hardcover by Warner Books (April, 1996)
Author: Marne Davis Kellogg
Average review score:

Ms. Kellogg lives up to her reputation
Curtsey, the second book in Ms. Kellogg's Lilly Bennett series, is just as wonderful as all the rest. Kellogg portrays Bennett brilliantly, giving her wisdom and insight into some very human traits she encounters throughout the book. I couldn't put this down, it truly is a breath of fresh air if you're used to reading normal, stuffy murder mysteries that involve the upper-class. This mystery, while still dealing with the upper class, is both funny, entertaining, and a great, easy read. It's nice and light but still grabs your attention and won't let it go. I highly recommend it.

An excellent portrayal of post civil war Colorado life.

Davis H. Waite: the Ideology of a Western Populist
Published in Textbook Binding by University Press of America (May, 1982)
Author: John R. Morris
Average review score:

AN EXCELLENT VIEW OF POLITICAL HERO, BLOODY BRIDLES
IF THE NAMES BIG BILL HAYWOOD, EUGENE DEBS, IGNATIUS DONNELLY, WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN, SOAPY SMITH SOUND FAMILAR, THEY ARE VERY FAMILAR TO DAVIS H. WAITE; a.k.a. BLOODY BRIDLES.

THE POLITICAL LIFE OF WAITE IS DOCUMENTED THROUGH EXTENSIVE RESEARCH OF SOURCES.

THE BIOGRAPHICAL SEGMENT LACKS FOR SOME ACCURACY REGARDING FAMILY HISTORY DETAILS AND ANCEDOTES. THIS SITUATION WILL BE CORRECTED IN THE NEW BIOGRAPHY OF WAITE BY HIS GREAT-GRANDSON, FRANK S. WAITE .

The Development of Law on the Rocky Mountain Frontier: Civil Law and Society, 1850-1912 (Contributions in Legal Studies)
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (July, 1983)
Author: Gordon Morris Bakken
Average review score:

Pretty darn good for a law book.
I choose this book from my reading list at law school last term, and of all the books in this catagory, I ranked this one on top. If it appears on your reading list - buy it, because it is very concise; the argument is easily understood; you can read it in three hours for class.

Edible and Medicinal Plants of the Rocky Mountains and Neighbouring Territories
Published in Paperback by Wild Rose College of Natural (01 September, 1992)
Author: Terry Willard
Average review score:

Comprehensive, well written book
This is a really neat book! It covers over 150 edible and medicinal plants and includes both photographs and line drawings of the herbs and plants for an easier time identifying them. Each plant has the common and botanical name, as well as a write up on identification, distribution and habitat, and Preparation and uses. Many of them also have folk stories related to the plants from native cultures. The appendices include A Glossary of botanical terms, Summary of herbal therapuetic groupings, Herbal preparations, and sources and recommended readings.

All in all, if I where to bring one book with me, out in the wild... this would be the one.
